Gustavo Dudamel has been awarded the 2020 Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, the highest award granted by the government of Spain to individuals and entities that have excelled in the field of artistic and cultural creation.

Gustavo says of the honor: "I am deeply humbled and honored to receive this award, particularly at a time when music, the arts, and education, are facing so many challenges from the global health and economic crisis. I am proud of what we have achieved through the Dudamel Foundation, teaching children how to better their lives through music and bringing the transformative power of art to people around the world. My heart and my home will always be in my beloved Venezuela, where I first came to music through El Sistema and Maestro Abreu, but I have been so moved at how Spain has welcomed me with open arms, and I love the rich cultural life that fills every corner of this beautiful country."
